I like to think I get around, but I have entirely missed the best public restrooms this nation has to offer, according to the America’s Best Restroom Hall of Fame.
I was so out of touch that I didn’t even realize there was an America’s Best Restroom award and Hall of Fame until alerted by this blog entry on the Chicago Tribune site. Seems voting is now under way for the 2009 award, and Chicago’s Drake Hotel has a lavatory among the finalists.
The standards are high. Some of the restrooms in the Hall of Fame have chandeliers or fireplaces. One of this year’s finalists has a hand-carved mahogany pool table in the men’s room. (In 2007, one of the finalists was in Flushing, Mich., which one has to assume conferred an advantage.)
In my own travels I am always delighted to find a restroom that is clean, and supplied with soap and toilet paper. Heat is nice in the winter.
