In Search Of America’s Best Restroom
| June 3rd, 2009 No commentsI like to think I get around, but I have entirely missed the best public restrooms this nation has to offer, according to the America’s Best Restroom Hall of Fame.
I was so out of touch that I didn’t even realize there was an America’s Best Restroom award and Hall of Fame until alerted by this blog entry on the Chicago Tribune site. Seems voting is now under way for the 2009 award, and Chicago’s Drake Hotel has a lavatory among the finalists.
The standards are high. Some of the restrooms in the Hall of Fame have chandeliers or fireplaces. One of this year’s finalists has a hand-carved mahogany pool table in the men’s room. (In 2007, one of the finalists was in Flushing, Mich., which one has to assume conferred an advantage.)
In my own travels I am always delighted to find a restroom that is clean, and supplied with soap and toilet paper. Heat is nice in the winter.

Delta Forced To Cancel Direct Nairobi Flights
| June 3rd, 2009 No commentsDelta was supposed to start flying today between Atlanta and Nairobi, but didn’t. The new route has been nixed by the U.S. government, citing safety concerns.
The last-minute cancellation has caused something of a diplomatic incident in Kenya, where the U.S. ambassador has been called on the carpet to explain, Reuters reports.
Delta is the only U.S. airline to fly its own planes (rather than code-sharing with foreign airlines) to Africa, and has been expanding its flights to the continent, AFP reports. The Nairobi flight was welcomed in Kenya, and flights had been sold out for weeks.
ABC News reports that the decision was made by Janet Napolitano, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, on the advice of the Transportation Security Administration because of increased fighting in neighboring Somalia.
