Norwegian Cruise Line has canceled a Caribbean cruise next month on the Norwegian Pearl to fix a problem with the propulsion system, according to Cruise Critic.
While this is rare, it does happen from time to time. When ships require unscheduled repairs for mechanical problems or collision damage, there’s no extra ship to replace it. The cruise gets canceled.
Cruise Critic says passengers are getting full refunds, plus 25 percent toward a future cruise. Of course, that may not cover the cost of airfare for those who arrange their own flights.
We barely escaped a disappointment like that back in 2005. A few weeks before our cruise, the ship smashed into a pier and was taken out of service for repairs. It didn’t have to go into dry dock, though, and we sailed as scheduled – with a big dent right above the water line.
