Continental Hearts United, Sort Of

It’s difficult to write about the shifting alliances and mergers in the airline industry without resorting to metaphors about marriage, or at least dating.

So, in a nutshell: Delta is engaged to Northwest. United can’t find a mate, but has finally got a date with Continental, which plans to join United’s club, the Star Alliance. That means Continental will have to move out of the SkyTeam alliance, which includes Delta and Northwest as members. (The Houston Chronicle explains what this means to passengers.)

Never mind that Continental was recently seen flirting with American Airlines and the OneWorld alliance. That’s all in the past now.

And what of U.S. Airways, which couldn’t work out a merger with United but still belongs to the Star Alliance? Can everyone stay friends?

Tune in next week, for another installment …
