NTSB: Pilots Fell Asleep

The real story is out about those two pilots who were suspected of falling asleep on a flight from Honolulu to Hilo in February. Turns out, they fell asleep.

So says the National Transportation Safety Board.

I was hoping it wasn’t true. It’s unsettling.

The pilots for Mesa subsidiary go! overshot the Hilo airport and flew for 18 miles while air traffic controllers tried to hail the pilots via radio. The pilots, who had been working a schedule of grueling short flights, woke up, turned the plane around and landed it safely.

Citing this incident and three previous incidents where pilot fatigue was implicated, the NTSB is suggesting that the FAA look into this whole pilot scheduling and fatigue thing.
