American Airlines is canceling hundreds of flights today and possibly tomorrow in order to reinspect the wiring in its MD-80 aircraft. According to the Houston Chronicle, the FAA was not satisified with a random check of the jets that American inspected last month.
MD-80s make up nearly half of American’s fleet. But the cancellations should not have much effect locally because because American doesn’t have any MD-80s on its schedule out of Bradley.
Last month American and Delta grounded hundreds of flights to inspect the MD-80s’ wiring. MD-80s make up about 20 percent of Delta’s fleet, but it’s not clear yet whether Delta will have to reinspect its aircraft.
