Motel 6 has decided that cheap doesn’t have to be ugly — a concept that Ikea and Target have been promoting for years. The hotel chain has unveiled a new prototype motel design with what it describes as "European boutique-style flair."
The "Phoenix" prototype has a 32-inch flat-screen TV, Wi-Fi and electronic gadgetry for hooking up laptops and MP3 players. It also has funky furniture and "wood-effect flooring." I’m not sure what "wood-effect flooring" is, but it looks fine in the picture, certainly a lot better than budget motel carpet.
Motel 6’s parent company, Accor, says it will start building the first Phoenix-style property this year, and will retrofit some existing motels with elements of the new design.
