United and Continental have both raised fares substantially – as much as $50 – across the board. We’ll see whether the other airlines follow suit. Southwest, already taking a public relations beating for its inspections failures, indicated that it will not, at least not immediately.
So maybe this particular fare increase will be rolled back because the competition won’t match it. But if that happens, the airlines will try again. They’ll have to. Fuel prices are at record highs and, according to many analysts, are set to rise even higher.
Somebody has to pay for that, and that somebody is us.
