What Went Wrong With Flight 038?

The question of why a British Airways 777 crash-landed at Heathrow last week will not be answered soon, but USA Today reports that the investigation seems to be focusing on the computers that control the engines and on the fuel supply system.

The pilots reported that the jet refused to increase power as it approached the airport. It crash-landed short of the runway, and 19 people were injured. Various sources suggest the aircraft may be a total loss.

The BBC has a good overview of the 777, which is considered a very reliable aircraft. (In the British Airways fleet, the 777 is equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent 800 engines.)

But it’s the photos in this Daily Mail story that really grab the attention. Turns out a dispatcher was out doing some photography as the 777 came in way too low.
