A Pathetic Amtrak Story

The kid flew into Boston yesterday, one of the busiest travel days of the year, and she arrived with a real travel nightmare story. But it wasn’t about her flight. It was about an Amtrak trip the previous week in California.

She was on a train from San Diego to Santa Barbara and, about 8 miles from her destination, the train slowed down and stopped. It was out of fuel.

At least it wasn’t a plane.

Anyway, the passengers sat on the train for two hours, in the dark for the last 20 minutes, before they were allowed off — but only if they could arrange their own transportation. She called her boyfriend and got a ride.

She has no idea how long the other passengers had to wait. The plan, the crew had told them, was to have a freight train push the Amtrak train to an intersection, where a fuel truck could reach them.

Sigh.

A lot of readers responded to this story. Not my readers. The Consumerist’s readers.
If you don’t read The Consumerist, you should. It’s a great watchdog and advocacy blog for, well, all of us. And I’m not just saying that because its editors linked to my blog, although that does show remarkably good sense.
