Subsidizing Private Aviation

Did you ever wonder what happens to all the taxes and fees that you pay when you buy an airline ticket? Apparently some of that money subsidizes small airports that serve private pilots and corporate jets, airports that you will probably never be able to use. The Associated Press has the story.

There are some arguments in favor of this, but they’re not particularly convincing to me. Maybe that’s because I just finished 25 hours of travel to get home from Europe. The notion that my taxes or fees in any way helped some wealthy corporate jet owner make the same trip in seven hours is just not sitting well with me at the moment.

Maybe I’ll feel better about it after I get over the exhaustion, the jet lag and the leg cramps. Or maybe not.
