I’ll tell you where to go … Florida Drive Out

It’s that time of year when the rental car companies start moving their fleets northward. They do it by offering great one-way deals from Florida to points north. How great? How about $10 a week.

Hertz has deals from April 8 through June 30 as low as $9.99 a week, which works out to $52 with the taxes and fees for a week behind the wheel of a Hyundai Accent. Bigger cars cost more. A Ford Taurus comes out to about $110 for a week.

Hertz lets you keep the car for up to 14 days, which is longer than these deals usually permit. But you can drop them off only at selected locations. In Connecticut, those drop-off points are in Hartford and Groton. More details here.

Avis offers one-way deals with cars picked up from several Florida airports starting at $9.99 a day for a car up to intermediate size and topping out at $15.99 for a minivan. With taxes and all that stuff, we’re talking a grand total of $134 to drive a Chevy Impala for six days.  The offer is good from April 9 to June 16.

Avis gives you only a week to complete your driving, but you can leave the car just about anywhere outside Florida, California and Las Vegas. More details here.

Budget’s rates start at $12.95 a day, available from April 9 to June 15, with a maximum seven-day rental. The drop-off point has to be outside Florida, California and Las Vegas. Details here.

I’m very comfortable booking car rentals on the Internet, but in this case I’d recommend finalizing the deal over the phone. These arrangements can be hard to book online because you have to get the pick-up and drop-off locations and times exactly right. Also, there’s a chance a friendly agent can find you an unadvertised car. Like maybe a convertible … You’ll find the phone numbers with the links above.

Oh, wait. And how do you get to Florida? At the moment I’m seeing one-day fares around $130 on several airlines from Bradley to various Florida locations. Southwest has fares around $120.

Here are some airport codes to check out:

Bradley: BDL
Orlando: MCO
Miami: MIA
Fort Lauderdale: FLL
Tampa: TPA

I’ve never had a chance to take advantage of one of these drive-out deals, but I’d love to hear from anyone who does it.
