For all practical purposes the $450 air fares we saw out of Bradley (and other East Coast airports) to Honolulu are gone, shot, kaput, over. With two weeks’ advance purchase and a rule that travel must be completed by Feb. 28 – well, you can do the math.
A few major airlines have come forward, though, with fares in the $540 to $560 range that are available into May – if you can book them at all.
This is not a rock-bottom deal, but a round-trip fare to Hawaii from the East coast for less than $600 is still a pretty good score. The trouble is, these fares are heavily restricted – some of them are for Saturday flights only, and the first three weeks of April are generally not available. I wouldn’t say it’s impossible to book into the March spring break period or the April school vacation week, but it won’t be easy.
Availability seem to open up a bit in May, though. And if the airlines are going to extend their little Hawaii price war, I’m going to keep an eye on things in the hope of more deals.
If you’re still wondering whether Hawaii is worth the trouble, please allow me to refer you again to our reader travel photos. Lovely, eh? It’s even prettier in person.
